The ‘Other’ Woman
Donna dials Simmi’s number with cold trembling fingers. Her young, mellifluous voice comes floating through, “Gmmorning Donna Ma’am! How are you?” With envy surging inside her, she mutters, “Anyone would fall in love with the b****.” Instead of mourning the impending collapse of her utopian world she congratulates herself for the timely discovery of the peril. Donna is determined to exercise her wifely right to protect her nuptial bond from the clutches of the temptress who has ironically been the source of the bliss that has filled the recent years of her life –Yes, Donna must give this much to her! The charm of Simmi’s juvenile persona has fully permeated Paul’s demeanor for the last four and a half years, hence, enriching Donna’s family life as well. But, then, the very fact that Paul’s happiness has been emanating from Simmi’s company –makes Donna feel like a fool.
Donna would often sense the chemistry between the two of them, when Simmi drooled over him at parties and school functions and Paul blushed like a teenager. But, she never expected such an accomplished young girl to fall for her average-looking, middle-aged husband. This very morning, Donna chanced upon Simmi’s text on Paul’s phone, ruthlessly revealing to her Paul’s infidelity. She was maimed. The devoted wife in Donna is ready to be pathetic, but the astute woman in her disallows adversity to cloud her better sense.
Though exasperating, the realization that she has already lost Paul to Simmi, is undeniable! Even if Donna physically throws her out of here, it will not serve any purpose, because the broken faith is piercing her heart more than Simmi’s presence. Trying to handle the setback, Donna presses the left side of her head –throbbing with migraine, “Is it, then, better to let her stay? Yes, she must let Simmi stay!
Donna –the headstrong woman, even at this juncture, can’t be that befuddled to allow Paul to let her down in such a crude way. The presence of ‘other woman’ in her husband’s life is too pedestrian a crisis to break a self-assured woman like her. She is an equal partner in the School Shares –well equipped with a Doctorate in Management to run the school independently if needed. She doesn’t need a man to run her life, but she might need skilled employees like Simmi to assist her. She doesn’t want to guard Paul for the rest of her life, nor is she ready to accept the shit being catered to her. Life has knocked her down –shown the things she had never expected to see, but she chooses to rise above the abuse and return the blow. Never in her life has she been short of courage to do what she deems right. Paul’s perfidiousness has given Donna the strength to snap the wedlock.
“Donna ma’am! Are you there? Hello?” Donna quietly disconnects the call and dials Paul’s number –It’s time to articulate her decision –to show Paul that ‘a strong woman’ doesn’t fear ‘the other woman’. She has to throw –not Simmi, but –Paul out of her life; she needs to set herself free, in order to retain her self-respect and sanity.
