“The hooded clouds , like friars ,
tell their beads in drops of rain.”….H.W.Longfellow.
Poets have repeatedly gone into raptures about the mysterious , billowing clouds.Wispy and ethereal, they fascinate with their shapes and varying hues. They come from one knows not where and go to another land, stopping by only to shower some benediction on the thirsty lands below .
THEY CAME
The clouds came
Ebony clad and ominous
Banshees with
tremulous silver gashes
Dancing the Tandav
To the bloodcurdling
claps of rumbling thunder
Alas ! No rain !
Not every terrace gets wet
Not every garden blossoms
The earthworm loses hope
The farmer holds his head
I think I heard the haunting notes
Of the flute resounding in the hills
Raag Megh Malhaar sobbed aloud
The clouds broke off their huddle
Some view them as curtains around the vault of heaven, others think that they are they robes of angels.Wordsworth has associated a wistfulness to clouds.
“I wandered lonely as a cloud, that floats on high o’er vales and hills”.
Majestically striding in the high skies, this harbinger of bountiful rain and mushy messages from lovesick damsels, is still a ‘lone ranger’.
“Barasat ka baadal toh deewaana hai kya jaane , kis raah se bachna hai , kis chhatt ko bhigona hai .”
The romance and hungering associated with the ”kaali ghatta chhaye, mora jiya lalchaaaye”, kind of overcast ,grey, weepy sky is the stuff myths and legends are made of. Lord Indra, the mischievous and amorous Indian god of rain and thundershowers , wields a lightning thunderbolt and rides a white elephant.I wonder if he is friendly with the Greek god Zeus and if they cavort and gambol in the skies together.
Heavy, rain laden clouds and heavy tearful hearts do well if they shed some water .They will feel lighter and will cheer up.
No rules of architecture are required if one is building a castle in the clouds. Never fear grey skies, for they are only the rain clouds passing by.The rosy hues in the horizon and the swing of a glistening rainbow often follow a dark , gloomy, cloudy day ..
”Na chunni lai surmayi kudde , tu lagge badli jayi kudde.”
