The Big Fat Indian Dog Wedding
The Indian obsession with marriages is so extreme, that recently two dogs Sweety and Sheru were made to tie the knot, in a town in North India.
Sweety was muzzled during the exchange of vows and Sheru was stricken with fear at the loud sound of the dhol beating into its sensitive eardrums. Sheru tried hard to run away. Sweety was nervous and ready to bite. The pet owners were oblivious to the dog’s plight. They were happy and dancing to the rhythm of the loud music. There were around 25 wedding cards too, distributed among the relatives. The owner spoke on camera with pride.
The sadness on the faces of the dog owner in sending Sweety off to Sheru’s home was extremely emotional. One cried and the other rejoiced. The pet owner of Sweety shed tears of sadness at the separation from her dog daughter. While the pet owner of Sheru was welcoming a dog bride in her home. It was exactly how it is played out when a girl leaves her parents home to start her new life with the in-laws.
Both parties were ignoring the trauma of the dogs. Sweety who will be separated from the owners would face extreme trauma in the new surrounding. Quite common for human brides too. The only blessed thing is the girl in a few cases can protest. The dog bride can only bark. This also brings to light the innate and deep acceptance of the adjustment that the female gender is supposed to make. She is always taken for granted to endure, even when traumatized. This time a bitch too wasn’t spared.
The understanding is that all will be well with marriage.
In this case, it’s a set of dogs. I do wonder how the dogs will adjust to one another. Will the adjustment ever happen? And would the dogs ever breed and would this be the same fate for the pups?
India leaves one immensely proud of all the development schemes that are being introduced in the country towards women issues and safety concerns. Will bitches also be included here on?
I am also left wondering if the guests were served Pedigree brand food. I have heard many dog owners tell me that pet food is palatable also for the human stomach. I have never dared this invitation. In this obsession of marriage, who knows? Maybe the wedded dogs would be fed jalebis, with the creamy kali dal and butter naan from the wedding menu.
