What song should I sing today?
Should I sing my verses to the music, I hear-
the longing rhythm of the koel as it reaches a crescendo,
impatient with the waiting;
the wailing strains of sirens that pick up the pace
with an urgency to reach, before the curtains fall
the heavy chords of one gasping for breath;
in fits and starts,
the gut-wrenching cries of broken hearts
shattering the silent night.
Or should I sing my verses to the music I wish to hear-
the comforting sounds of church bells, temple gongs, and the azaan
their notes vibrating through the air to reach the soul,
the peppy beats of rock and rap booming across the neighborhood
announcing cheer of celebrations and festivity,
the shrill tune of school bells, cycle bells, vehicle horns
reigning in a new day, a semblance of life resume,
the baritone sound of a cough or a sneeze
marking the return to normalcy and not a warning to flee.
Tell me, what music you would have me sing
to, and I’ll perform for you today
hoping the euphony to which I sing
will make you open your lips and sing with me today.
