It was sunset in Pampore
The saffron fields were awake
Their ears alert
The boy in his phiran ran across the apple and cherry trees
Each step a rebellion
The men in khaki were everywhere
Staring down from pickets and gunny bag strengthened roadblocks
He whistled the tune that his mother hummed
As she crushed the cardamom and almonds for his kahwa
She had rolled up a Shirmal for him to munch on
As he sped to meet his sister
She awaited him eagerly
For news of their older brother
The one that had vanished without a trace
The one they looked out for as the sun parted the chinars
The saffron crocus bulbs Colouring the ground
With an ocean of purple
The Jhelum smiled knowingly on its eastern banks
Pampur with its ancient name
Had tales that no child must hear
But those that each child breathed in with the zaafraan scented breeze
